Monkey Search

Recommend Morning or afternoon Duration Up to 2 hours and a half Lodge Tambopata Research Center
Difficulty I - II Best at All year
As you trek through the floodplain forest, the air hums with sound. Walking with your guide, these sounds are strange and unfamiliar: caws, screeches, even purrs. By the end of your Monkey Search, you’ll find many of the animals the sounds correspond to. In fact, here comes number one: a crashing brash, a wind-like roar. You’ve spotted your first Red Howler Monkey, and many more will follow.

In the tall jungle perched above the river — known as floodplain forest — near our Tambopata Research Center Lodge, the rainforest overflows with diverse wildlife. Because of its rich soil and giant trees, this part of the forest attracts many monkeys! Most noteworthy are the floodplain’s forests many Spider MonkeysRed Howler Monkeys, and Brown Capuchin Monkeys. In fact, the trail gives you perhaps the best chance to see a wide variety of monkey species. But on this vibrant trail, you’ll find much more than just monkeys. You’ll be amazed at the trail’s diversity — you might even come across the tracks of a Puma, Ocelot, or Jaguar. This is untouched, truly wild Amazonia at its very best.

Why You’ll Love the Monkey Search?

  • See Marvelous Monkeys and Much, Much More: The trail passes by biodiverse forest, jungle streams, and ponds, giving you the chance to spot every possible type of Amazon wildlife. In addition to the many monkeys you can find, you may also spy White-Lipped Peccary herds, Manakins, Antbirds, Toucans, Woodcreepers, Trogons, and even more!

  • Visit a Diverse Floodplain Forest: These rainforests are subject to various degrees of flooding during the rainy season and on account of the rich nutrients left by the river, they have a high degree of diversity and immense trees. Due to these factors, along with many tasty fig trees that animals love, the floodplain forest is rich in plant and animal life. No rainforest trip would be complete without experiencing the ecosystem!
