EXPERIENCE The ecological beauty of the forest

Brazil Nut Trail & Camp

Recommend Morning or Afternoon Duration 2 hours and a half Lodge Posada Amazonas, Refugio Amazonas
Difficulty I Best at All year
Towering high up into the canopy, you crane your neck to see to the top of the immense Brazil Nut Tree. It’s one of the most magnificent trees you’ve ever seen. And somehow, dozens of these trees loom above you all around this forest grove. In fact, you’re in one of the best-preserved Brazil Nut forests in this part of the Amazon jungle. But on the Brazil Nut Trail, you won’t just admire these giant trees’ splendor. The Brazil Nut trees are actually heroes of the rainforest, providing a sustainable and eco-friendly living to many jungle dwellers.

On the Brazil Nut Sustainability Trail, your guide leads you through a spectacular, old-growth patch of Brazil Nut forest. For decades — perhaps centuries — locals have harvested the trees’ plentiful Brazil Nuts. Two months a year, the nut-gatherers set up camp here, and you’ll visit the camp’s remains as well. Then, you will learn about the entire process, from the nut’s collection through transportation, drying, and its transformation into familiar products. Most noteworthy, the Brazil Nut is actually the Amazon rainforest’s only sustainably harvested commodity!

Why You’ll Love the Brazil Nut Trail

  • Be Inspired by Sustainable Farming: Brazil Nut trees only grow under pristine jungle conditions, and people only collect their seeds once they’ve naturally fallen. Due to these unique factors, the trees actually encourage sustainable practices! You’ll also learn what it takes to preserve the Brazil Nut Tree and its sustainable farming. Over-hunting of the tree’s seed dispersers, like the Agouti, and over-harvesting of the nuts must stop for the trees and Brazil Nut harvesting to survive.

  • Discover a Rainforest Miracle Plant: Brazil Nut Trees are some of the tallest in the Amazon, stretching up to 50 meters (160 feet). The nuts themselves fall in coconut-like shells that weigh up to five pounds, and are so hard that we can only open them with several machete swings! And the nuts are packed with healthy fats, protein, and vitamins, making them popular worldwide.
